Sue Miller – Cuban Flute Improviser, Writer & Academic

Review of Charanga del Norte gig Wakefield Jazz ClubApril 25th, 2025

The Whitman Review: Charanga del Norte at Wakefield Jazz Club on 20 October 2023

“The band’s music drew on forms and traditions (largely Cuban and Cuban-American) which are clearly as deep and entangled as those that arose largely from New Orleans. And now, of course, the musical world is seamless, at least for those interested enough to venture far from home. Charanga del Norte is very much part of the same movement elsewhere in Jazz that honours the tradition while expanding its boundaries. (Sue Miller has studied with the greats and holds a doctorate in flute improvisation in Cuban charanga performance from the University of Leeds.)

The inclusion of a string section in the band—four violins and a cello—was intriguing. But instead of forwarding the strings for something resembling tea dance interludes, they were largely deployed to provide texture and occasional sweetness. The exceptions were a few brief solos from cellist Andy Wardale and some fiery improvisations from Nick Williams on violin.

The tight interaction of the rhythm instruments—always percussion-rich but not percussion-heavy—is what drives the music forward. Sue Miller’s stamina was as remarkable as the quality of her flute-playing, since she was responsible for sustaining a clear and arresting melodic line above the sheer breadth and force of the rest of the band. Improvisationally, too, her flute playing was a wonderful demonstration of the possibilities that a truly creative player can open up.

They weren’t getting away without an encore; and since the musicians themselves certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves, we were met with cheerful willingness.”
